The report -- released by the Accra Caucus, of which CARE is a member -- highlights three critical components to protecting forests: full and effective participation; secured and equitable land rights; and community-based forest management. The Accra Caucus is a network of more than 100 northern and southern civil society organisations campaigning on forests and climate change.

The report is an output of the Social Assessment of Protected Areas (SAPA) Initiative. It is the culmination of a series of workshops, meetings and discussions held over the last couple of years. The SAPA initiative arose in recognition of the lack of a standardised, objective approach by which to understanding the social effects of protected areas.
