Promise or peril?
Addressing the parallel priorities of climate change, poverty and conservation
Through “multiple-benefit" agriculture, forestry and other land-use projects
Thursday 8 November 2007 4 - 5 pm in Room 1
European Development Days 2007 www.eudevdays.eu
CARE's Mi Bosque project in Guatemala is pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and storing it in the form of beneficial trees and more fertile soils. This is an example of a multiple-benefit “bio-sequestration" project. Together with projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by avoiding deforestation, they have succeeded in directing financial resources from carbon markets to support the development of poor communities and their adaptation to climate change. By excluding these project types, major compliance markets like the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme largely prevent poor people from participating in and benefiting from the vast potential of carbon markets.
This parallel event will explore how multiple-benefit projects can reliably reduce atmospheric greenhouse gases, tackle poverty and conserve biodiversity,
as well as what needs to happen in order for carbon markets to work for poor people.
Please join us in this interactive dialogue session, facilitated by Anders Wijkman, MEP with
- Dr. Charles Ehrhart, Climate Change Coordinator for CARE International, who will speak about making carbon markets work for poor people
- Luis Paiz Bekker, National Programs Director for CARE Guatemala, who will speak about the multiple-benefits of the Mi Bosque project
- Dr. Joanna Durbin, Director of the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance who will speak about standards and safeguards
- Eric Bettelheim, Executive Director of Sustainable Forestry Management, who will speak about political challenges and opportunities
Kindly find below a flyer for the event and please feel free to forward this invitation within your organisation, particularly to those planning to attend the European Development Days or those who are working in this field.
