Practical tools for reducing an organisation's carbon footprint Print E-mail

In recent years, climate change has grown to become one of the most pressing issues concerning international NGOs. Given the urgency of reducing global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, many NGOs are already extending their climate change programs beyond policy engagement and adaptation to include GHG emissions reductions strategies. CARE is responding by developing practical tools for use within CARE and the wider NGO community:

English: Doing the right thing: A guide to taking responsibility for CARE’s greenhouse gas emissions (ENGLISH LINK) (SPANISH LINK)

This report reviews the process of ‘going carbon neutral’ from the standpoint of NGOs. It provides detailed commentary on the steps toward neutrality – including calculating the organizational emissions footprint, reducing emissions to the greatest extent possible, and purchasing offsets to attain a net zero or ‘neutral’ carbon footprint. Drawing upon the experiences and aspirations of CARE Members and Country Offices, it suggests a practical five-step path toward neutrality.

CARE International in Vietnam has created a handbook for its employees, giving them practical ways to reduce their greenhouse emissions and 'go green.' They also place posters and stickers around the office to remind people to conserve energy, use less paper, turn off lights and minimize their use of water.
